The Seccessful Ending Of Our Activity

The recently concluded Second Hefei City Birding Competition, held in conjunction with the Hefei sub-venue of the China National Birdwatching Festival, saw remarkable performances from the members of the Hefei No.1 High School Birdwatching Club.

This birding competition was more than just a test of observation and knowledge; it served as a vivid lesson in nature education and scientific practice. The students from Hefei No.1 High School Birdwatching Club traversed urban parks and lakeside wetlands, using cameras to document the presence of each bird species and listening intently to their songs. Amidst the fierce competition, student Gu Yueming stood out from numerous participants and was awarded the “Exquisite Notebook Prize.” This award recognized her meticulous observations and detailed, well-illustrated birding notes. This honor is not only a testament to personal dedication and passion but also reflects the rigorous and practical scientific attitude of Hefei No.1 High School students.

Away from the competitive grounds, the Birdwatching Club members were also a standout presence in the event’s public service activities. The students actively participated in public awareness campaigns about bird protection and knowledge. They enthusiastically explained the habits of local common bird species to citizens, promoted the importance of protecting bird habitats, and used their specialized knowledge to inspire and call on more people to join the cause of bird protection. Their actions demonstrated the social responsibility of teenagers in the new era.

Even more commendable is that the students did not treat birdwatching as merely a one-time competition. They strictly adhered to scientific protocols, systematically organizing the valuable data recorded during the event—including bird species, counts, behaviors, and habitat conditions—and submitted it all to the national bird monitoring database. This initiative perfectly exemplifies the concept of “Citizen Science.” Each student became a “citizen scientist” on the front lines of ornithological research. The data they collected will serve as an important foundation for scientists studying bird population dynamics, distribution changes, and assessing ecological environment quality, directly contributing the data efforts of Hefei No.1 High School to the construction and improvement of China’s bird database.
